“Before The Firing Squad”



the firing squad 
came dressed
in faux smiles

the intervention cake 
was spoon fed, like honey,
by mother superior

to the lesser bee,
with self-righteous
magnanimity

she wore the badge
Devil’s Advocate, proudly,
without any clear authority

casting bloodied 
nasturtiums around the 
sacred cow’s neck

then the F-cluster gaggle
tossed the child 
without clear thought

shooting the Star, 
like a dice 
across a wheel

rushin’ the roulette -
like amateurs, a game, 
they had never played before, 

no, 
not once 
at all -

without clear thought,
like a dog's breakfast bedraggled
onto the wrong side’s plate

recidivist still in its greens,
and its covetous monkey -
both criminals, 

charm 
idiots 
easily, 

then, as friendly demons,
invited by betrayal, 
sulfuric and self-entitled, 

glide in like masterminds,
they slip through the 
barking bedazzled buffoons -

all goons, 
ghosting gas lit 
ill informed useless opinions

drown each other out,
dumbing down what's 
really in the ring, 

cheers all around
drowning 
in another's sorrow

they raise 
their congratulatory toasts
non-commiseratory and drink

to their 
better tomorrows; 
meanwhile,

pinned to the wall
through justice’ blindfold,
the all-seeing stood helpless

without words,
voice gone awol,
watched her world burn

betrayal looks kind
like a trusted promise,
la familia kiss without apology

the apology
never arrives
at all -

let alone time
it slips through 
fingers like water flows

in a 
fathomless ocean,
like tears;

the dismissive, 
with their patronising 
there there’s, 

appear on spec
twisted and meaningless
from addled sisters

how could they know
it was never any 
of their business

pretentious, 
the Cambridge bogun
playing la familia boffin pontiff,

so totally non mensa,
tepid and spineless
like Shylock,

picked 
a mother’s heart
like a pocket 

spiriting 
her largest world
over to the time thieves

the sacrifice 
swiftly shipped to Moriah
with nonchalant ease

the most loved 
driven 
all the way, and

over the cliff notes 
abrupt edge 
went AWOL, all the way -

then, the sweet song,
a larger universe 
that was never his to sing,

sacrificed, 

the most missing 
became scales 
driven instead

looping 
silent conversations
looping

writing 
spells 
to music

conjures a howling wolf
bathing mind large in the light 
of luminous full moon

tears for the sacrifice 
a life remaining, she glues in gold
the puzzle pieces back together

the front facing kintsugi 
turns 
keys crooning

seeking solice 
in the sage salve 
of tea leaves, and 

hallucinatory four leaf clovers,
the forever absent 
eternally invokes 

the glittering
mea culpa
like a record, chipped

absent 
from where one 
should be; 

in the present
a mind and body
missing

poetic missives 
for a future 
long stolen, dead

glitching 
golden chords
over a repeating head

triggers 
engaged 

blindfold removed
