Poem
(Since returning to civilian life, in order of appearance.) Susan, I’d been shacked up with her before my final deployment overseas. We took up again for a few months when I returned, then things changed. Laura, a girlfriend when I was a senior in High School, before I left for the Navy. We took up again for a few months when I returned, then things changed. Gale, Middle name, Storm. She'd been in the Army. I met her where she was tending bar. It lasted a few weeks, then things changed. Barbara, a relationship that was on-and-off for about five years. Then things changed. Carol, a girl I met where I was tending bar. We had a drunken one-night stand. Bambi, a girl I met where I was tending bar. We had a drugged-up one-night stand. Roxalana, a Ukrainian girl I met in Senior History Seminar. We had a scholarly one-night stand. Betsy, a girl I met in a bar. She was high and tight. It lasted a few weeks. Then things changed. Belinda, A girl from England who was working same place I was. I liked her accent. She liked I had money. It lasted a couple weeks. Then things changed. Barbara, again. This time for twenty turbulent years… Then things changed. It was the only relationship that produced anything of lasting value. A wealth beyond compare. Jacqueline, my first post-divorce girlfriend after marriage #1. She was an accomplished equestrienne who owned two horses, Tucker, and George. It was a good thing for about nine months. Then things changed. Roberta, a conservative Republican, and devout Roman Catholic. We had nothing in common. But Catholic girls give good communion. We had a four-night stand. Jennifer, I call her the salad lady for reasons I’ll not divulge. We had a one-day stand. Jolanta, a high school math teacher from Poland. She was spiritual and sincere. It was a good thing for a couple months. Then things changed. Leslie, an artist who lived in a cottage that seemed out of a fairytale. It was a good thing for a few months. Then things changed. Debra, moon-cat girl, a crazy one. Definitely a one-night stand. Michele, with one L. My beard rubbed her chin raw. It lasted a few weeks. Then things changed. Kyle Susan, middle name included for a reason. She ran a day-care center. It lasted a couple weeks. Then things changed. Back with Leslie again, but only Christmas to New Year. Then things changed. Theresa, an acupuncturist, a yoga enthusiast, and a big believer in astrology. It lasted four years. Then things changed. Just like that. I wonder if she saw it coming. Lori, my first post-divorce girlfriend after marriage #2. She was a true white witch, and a caster of magnetic spells. We had a very pleasant few months. Then things changed. Lisa, worked in a flower shop. We had a florid one-night stand. Jennifer, a very lively girl from England. We had a three-night stand. Sarah, a Dominican girl who loved music. We had a one-night stand after dinner. Sharon, a pediatric nurse. We had a childish one-night stand after lunch. Lisa, was very petite. We had a short one-night stand. Alla, a Ukrainian girl who liked ballroom dancing, And just another tawdry one-night stand. So, what’s the point of all this fine romancing? I guess it’s just another Valentine on my one nightstand.
