Being a child of the sixties
here in the UK life was a treat
such variety in all the shops
contrasts aplenty so much to meet

The history of the department store
goes way back to 1900s no less
since then to this our modern-day
where so much change became a mess

Debenhams, House of Fraser and John Lewis
were really big names in their day
but bad times come even the big ones
with Covid and economic depression so grey

Remind oneself of the American influence
one certain Harry Gordon Selfridge came
to change the UK shopping forever
vision was evident to inspire his game

Our departmental stores so much loved
now looking back reminiscence afresh
the future now no one knows it
but this demise so sad to simply press

Well maybe it's had its day
this world changing many a way
remember we're just lumps of clay
one day we'll all outlive our stay

(Just some thought on the demise of the British departmental store.)
