"My legacy remains long after my departure" by Curtis Johnson

When we die, most people believe that our spirit leaves our body.                                                                                          What comes next with regards to where the spirit goes and what it does,                                              engenders a world of disagreements. Presently, concern is given only with                                                      what a person leaves behind after death.                                                                                                              

The non physical 'remains' are far more lasting than the human body. Having served its useful purpose on earth, the 'remains' of the human body will quickly decay.  We speak of 'remains' in reference to a person's dead body, and much concern is given about how we treat and dispose of such 'remains'.  Indeed, we deem them sacred as well we should. But that is another subject.

Here, attention is given to 'remains' as a legacy of character, deeds, works, beliefs, the efforts, and the actions we perform or produce before we die.  These 'remains' are more than great memories.  In a sense, such 'remains' take on a character of their own, resulting from the 'good life' of the person who has died and passed on.  Such non physical 'remains' may be expressed in a myriad of ways. It may be a hospital wing or a beautiful edifice, a good name, or a highly respected way of life; just to name a few.

One of my most gratifying moments took place a few years ago when a lady complimented me for one of my poems that she read.  The gratification was because her compliment prompted me to say, after thanking her, that I was so grateful that God had allowed me to write that poem and others before I departed this life. It would have been a shame and an utter disappointment to have taken what's inside of me to the grave and not leave it for others to read and benefit from them.

Legacy has been defined as inheritance; also : something that has come from a predecessor or the past.  The Scripture says that we brought nothing into this world (when we are born), and it is certain that we will take nothing out (when we die)*.  However, it is very interesting that we can leave something behind that will live on and serve mankind long after we are gone. Indeed, my legacy 'remains' long after my departure. In my own heart and mind, this concept, this way of thinking, this philosophy is highly cherished and is one of the most meaningful in my life.
