I am grateful to Mister Corey for showing me the beauty
of what it was to be a boy.

The toys he sold me taught lessons I needed 
to become a man.

He saw some of the things I bought tended toward war.
Tanks and soldiers I played with constantly,
not noticing a potential future cost to society.

He would gently invite me to other parts of his store,
encouraging me to explore other ways to have fun
which did not involve a gun.

And somehow he knew my birthday was in September.

He knew that little boys were not aware 
of the horror that war could be,
but were enamored of glory.

I remember...

Mister Corey was always very nice to me.
