Old Habits We Need to Break

When we were young death seemed like a far away star,
Part of reality, but alas we held afar.
Then you reach the peak of life and you can see what’s on the other side,
Then you search for better ground so you don’t slip and slide.

Then you start to realize as many friends you lose,
The things you did in younger years, were things you should refuse.
Like smoking that old cigarette or having one last drink,
Causes emphysema, but who would stop and think.

Then your liver starts to fail, you can blame that on the booze,
Cause when you’re taking your dirt nap there’ll be plenty of time too snooze.
Most of us have done these things we’ve taken years away,
That you cannot recoup my friend no matter what they say.

The choices that we make each day can help to keep us strong,
Nobody wants to be the one that has to say so long.
As that star gets closer and you can see its light,
Be the one that stands your ground and fight the awesome fight.

I smoked for over forty years, then one day I said enough,
I laid them suckers down that day I showed them who was tough.
Over six years it’s been my friend and I breath better with each new day,
It’s not as hard as you think it is, if you ask God to help you find the way.
