Poem
Mavis and Gladys from Eskimo Street Were having a good old blether When the doors of the food bank opened And everyone pushed in together Mavis fancied some powdered mash And Gladys a tin of beans They didn’t want to be there But they were living beyond their means There was panic at the food bank The tins were flying off the shelves The girls had to be so careful That they didn’t hurt themselves Gladys couldn’t find the beans So she just took this and that Mavis got her powdered mash But then someone stole her hat There was panic at the food bank There were so many people there Gladys was angry about the beans She thought it quite unfair Mavis saw some biscuits That her hubby might enjoy He was a pain and he got on her nerves But she often treated the old boy Gladys searched for cat food That was handy to get Her cat ate more than she did He was a greedy little pet There was panic at the food bank Things were getting quite feisty It couldn’t be helped as times were hard And food is very pricey Hands were reaching everywhere Grabbing what they might But the girls weren’t empty-handed They took everything in sight They were getting in the swing now The elbows were coming out And if anyone got in the way They received a timely clout Tins of fruit, tins of custard And pilchards for the cat The girls had gone quite feral No time for pleasant chitchat Arms full and bags bursting They made their way to the door It was hanging on its hinges It was almost on the floor The girls regained their dignity Like a pair of Satisfied Queens As they walked to way Gladys was heard to say ‘Shame about the beans’
