Poem
No longer a child, but her memories are clear of the nights when her mother sat very near, reading her the story of 'The Velveteen Rabbit' It became her favorite book, a nightly habit. She'd cuddle her stuffed rabbit within her arms telling him he must believe in magical charms. Her Mom had made him a suit of blue velveteen, the softest fabric the child had ever seen. Pretending her bunny was the one in the book she gave him a hug and a tender loving look. The story is about a rabbit who wants to be real and to this child, the story held great appeal. What little one would not love to have a friend who would come alive by the story book's end? She didn't like it when the bunny was snubbed so she soothed her bunny, ears gently rubbed. She'd never ignore her stuffed rabbit, not ever and promised their friendship she'd not sever. Her Mom lovingly read until she was fast asleep and as she grew up the book she swore to keep. But when her Mom died and they moved away, the book was lost until one very special day. On her sixteenth birthday, she was presented with a gift that she'd lost, and had long lamented. Her Dad found it in a trunk stored in the attic. He gave her a book that made her feel ecstatic! 'The Velveteen Rabbit" was a gift she'd treasure for fond memories of her Mom; beyond measure. In a place of honor she placed it on a bookshelf, near an old photograph of her Mom and herself, next to her bunny, though worn and threadbare. She showed him the book, her little brown hare.
