Poem
Our son CJ celebrated his 40th birthday, Immediate family invited to Ramsgate In Natal, to celebrate this day in a special way, A guest house was rented by our son, Which once again became our fate! By the sea, what a wonderful view to see, We arrived last Monday, and the fun, Immediately begun. Evenings, we took turns to cook, I took a book, How silly always something to do, Like children we even played pass the parcel, We all wanted to win even Marcel, Who I had never met, but I won the voucher. We played 30 seconds, this game Made you think, Somewhat quick, If you have played it you will know One of the greatest family games, Under our sun, Which revs. adrenalin, such fun! We watched Netflix, had a photo shoot, Went down to the sea, a mere stones Throw away, So every day Was filled with excitement, and our meals We ate on a deck, overlooking the sea, Thought we were safe, but there were eyes Looking at everyone from the bushes Including at my husband and me! On the Friday night and Saturday night, I smelt incense burning from outside, Which I mentioned to my husband, But we paid no attention to this sweet smell, We went to bed And as soon as our head Touched the pillow. We dropped off to sleep, Certainly, no fear, That danger was near! We were ten in the house and five big dogs, The next morning my husband stretched out For his phone, We felt quite comfortable, like being at home, But there was no phone, Mine wasn’t there either, nor were our, Cameras, our computers, our binoculars, My jewellery, and a host of other things My bag, my husband’s hearing aids And his brief case, I looked at my husbands’ ghostly white face, We had been robbed whilst we slept, That incense smell came from them Making sure humans and any pet, Fell fast asleep! No one heard anything, not even a beep. And the dogs didn’t bark, It was pitch dark. I felt sickened at the thought Of someone looking over us With perhaps a knife, Endangering each of our lives. They had watched us for two days, Whilst they burnt this mixture Probably obtained from a Sangoma,* Which opened up the box of Pandora! They got in through wide spaced Burglar bars, and stripped us. The police came and then the detectives, The whole day spent assessing our loss And finger prints taken galore From door knobs and cupboards, And footprints from the floor. Had to travel back with no phone, So on our way back home, Could not phone our children On our five hundred mile journey, Who stressed, This was another test, Which we had to face, But with God’s grace, All things are possible But what evil arrogance and persistence, These thieves had, as they entered our Bedroom, they felt this was their right, Thieves in the night! *Sangoma – a traditional healer or diviner
