MOTHER

Mother is a very meaningful word.
Mother is a person that carries a lot of weight.
When I think of mother,
Mother Mary comes to my mind.

The understanding, courageous, protective Mother.
Understanding the responsibilities of a mother,
having the courage to take in the role of being a mother 
and having the protective instinct
to do everything possible for her child.
  
Mother, the matriarch of the family,
keeping her children under her wings,
attending to each child with grace
and vast understanding that each child
has its own peculiar needs and
therefore, treating each child accordingly
to feel loved, accepted and well adjusted.

Mother has admirable qualities,
comforting and nurturing each of her infants,
encouraging and guiding each of her children,
supporting and motivating her children
and yes, understanding, passing on her words of wisdom
and giving her shoulders to cry on
for each of her children.

There are mothers, who bore children;
but do not have the responsibilities of a mother
or do not possess the high esteem of being a mother.

Mothers, who bear children,
when they are still children themselves
and their newborns are set up for adoptions.
Some of these mothers may
have motherly instinct of wanting
to find their children later on.

Or there are mothers that are too selfish and self-centered,
mentally challenged or consumed with addiction
that having a child is too overwhelming
or a disturbance, a hindrance to them.
So they leave the child behind or give it up.

Or there are the ones who do everything
they can to be a responsible mother;
but no matter what they do
is not enough to provide for their children.

They are the mothers,
who make a heartbreaking decision
to leave their children behind
under the care of others to seek
a better future for their children.

They are the ones who suffer
the complexities of separation
resulting in guilt for leaving,
sadness and heart break
for not being with their children 
and uncertain about the future of the children
because the rift may cause resentment, angst,
aloofness and anger from the child
or the future they would have together
because the rift can cause estrangement.

There are also career oriented mothers,
who focus on their careers or businesses
and may have others attend to their children
or the ones who try to do their best
on both, career and children.

There are the single mothers,
who take on two more roles,
the sole providers and part-time
fathers of their children.

Being a mother in true sense
is a tremendous vocation  
requiring strength, tenacity, patience
understanding, compassion, love.

However, there are mothers,
who are mean, cold, distant,
abusive, manipulative, play favoritism.
Or mothers, who spoil and enable their children,
thinking money can buy anything.

Or mothers, who push their children
to be what they wanted to be
when they were young
or because they failed to achieve
their own dreams.

There is no perfect mother
in this unsettled, intriguing world.
Although, most mothers try.
Yes, most mothers try to be the best they can be
inspite of battling their own demons,
or while working on their own personal
problems, issues or insecurities.

Some show strength
when they are falling apart.
They continue to be tenacious,
when they feel like giving up.

They try to be patient,
when they are in the verge of exploding.
They hold on to their understanding,
when they do not really understand why.
They act like they do to give
support and consolation.

They are compassionate,
when they are the ones needing compassion.
Their love is pure and endless
and yet, there are times when its
not reciprocated and appreciated
by the children because of something
she had done or failed to do.

Mothers, who art thou?
Let us open our hearts, our mind
and let our spirits guide us
to honor thy mothers, no matter what,
and to let them be for who they are
for we will not be here without mothers.
So, honor thy Mothers by holding them
in our heart and in our mind
and being with them in our spirit.
