Poem
The words fell on my soul, drawing tears From the depths of my spirit, tender tears… Rushing down naked cheeks, penetrating Hope with stabs of regret, sorrow, angst An ache that gave me a feeling it would never Fade or degrade its raw sensation of grief “Michael died – he passed away… gone into eternity” Mourning throbbed on my heart with pounding Pulsing rhythms of despair, misery, sorrow As my heart thumped awake, pounding out a beat That told me I was alone, abandoned by a heart Who had known only kindness, gentleness, love Death is like a knife slicing away at the veins Of one whose heart is racing with silent pain That courses through the crimson layers of life Stark as the gray clouds, drifting along the horizon Hiding the sun beneath the doubt and sadness Spoiling every thought of joy and contentment Vibrating, beating out an echo of lamenting, weeping Like the hole inside gushing out rivers of tears Would not be clogged or blocked by any kind thought Consoling words and pity from sympathizers Couldn’t pierce through the shell of agony The ache that wound a trail straight through me Coloring my life in black dread and torment Hues of hope were left at the side of the road Where this lost love couldn’t possibly find the courage Or strength to reach out to someone for the chance Of a comforting solace that might allow me The accidental fortune of one optimistic thought The ache of this loss was more than my mind Could take, more than my heart could accept, More than I could recognize as mere fate, Silencing the flood of desolation that left me with An ache I had never suffered before in my lifetime… It came with a roar who beckoned death to die itself! Die, death… oh, die, you monster of destruction Die, die, die… Writing Prompt - Ache - Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Constance La France April 22, 2021
