Poem

She came out of the water,

naked, free, and without a care,

skin smooth, soft, and wonderfully bare,

the man’s face was expressionless,

unreadable, pale, and cold,

her attitude nevertheless was sweet and her actions bold,

his face drawn to a frown of distaste,

and his disrespect for beauty was a disgrace,

and it was clearly written across his face,

he looked up at the cloudless sky,

and saw that the sun had declined below the mountain top,

suddenly something caught his eye,

and he knew he just had to stop,

look and listen,

his thought was to end her existence,

but the naked woman had silver wings,

they appeared when she reached full height,

and he’d never seen such things,

and he never witnessed such a sight,

her wings rising to cup the still air,

she hovered for a moment, wings working,

and his mind riddled with fear,

he almost dropped his knife, but returned it to his belt instead,

the man’s motion made her move her head,

she saw him as he flinched an inch,

wondering if running toward her for the kill

would be the wisest thing to do,

he wanted to destroy her, that he knew.

She heard the wind howl

as if God was calling,

warning her that the idea running through the man’s head was appalling.

She broke off and flew toward the sky,

he had almost killed an angel,

and there was certain death in his eye,

the ground beneath his feet was solid,

but he felt it sink just a little,

It was already understood,

that in every man,

if he could would either run or kill anything he didn’t understand.
