Poem
Pulled on the parka, and turned my face to the cold street. Half running, half slipping, piece of toast hangin' from my mouth.. man oh man am I late... Two and half blocks south down Jerome to the station.. gotta make the Kingsbridge nine o five. Thank the lord above that train's never been on time. Watched the wheels whip up a flurry leaving the station. No longer in a hurry, stopped cold, my watch's face laughing. Mickey's long arm with those odd giant hands, pointing at the five. Saw something moving fast, outta the corner of my eye, was that dingey chrome? too bad it couldn't stop. I watched one glove fly away. The Bronx sky.., so grey, came into view of my left eye. Heard the angry Beetle's pilot ask 'Are you alright?!?' In hindsight., oh lord, never been better. Helped get me back to my feet, Mickey wasn't so lucky. That laughing mug's bezel cracked and shattered.. with one hand still pointin' at the five. She was talking fast, as the German punter hit second gear. My own voice sounded hoarse, and a little put off, when I noticed the car was heading the wrong way. 'Where are you going? I'm gonna be late to work!' 'Union is the closest Emergency room' I heard her say, ears still ringing... She tipped the rearview mirror toward my face, and her cool breath came at me in a misty sighing wave. Finally understood why my right eye vision was so blurred. 'I don't want to go to Union, just drop me at my place'. 'I'll go and wash my face., can I get a ride to Manhattan? I can cover your gas'... Wiped the mess from my injured eye, and turned to steal a glance.. Oh..my. She is beautif.., my aching head quit saying to itself. Suddenly lost the ability to speak. Still remember the look in that lovely face. Scared and a bit pensive maybe, but in the nicest possible way. 'Why were you standing in the middle of the street?' So many questions in those hazel eyes. 'I missed my train', I heard me say. Well., she got me through that morning, helped me clean my face. The day she quite literally, knocked me off my feet. I never made it to work, it was lost to a crazy time. Those first days, and oh the nights to follow, spent with the girl, that hit me with a Beetle.. and granted me a learner's permit in love. I thank the lord above that train was right on time.. and for the girl that came to my rescue, the day I missed the Kingsbridge nine o five.
