It’s almost midnight Cinderella, her Fairy Godmother whispered.
She laughed so hard, the couch fell in two.
I smiled at old crone's mistake. She does not know my cousin well.
She limped out of there in her rags, horrifying the prince.
He did not chase after her, too stunned.
Why do you always have to change the ending? I asked her.
Because I can, she said, it amuses me and I don’t need saving.
I know how to make a living, so I can always make my own way.
He can keep his money, the castle, the horses, the servants.
I don’t like baggage. Just being able to shock the whole castle
Especially my Stepmother and my ridiculous stepsisters is enough.
Watching their faces as I turned back into me was priceless
This memory will give me enthusiastic happiness forever after.
The prince regained his senses and ran after her.
She turned and put up her hand.
Talk to the glass slipper, she said, dropping it into his hand.
Because Cinderella ain’t listening; you hesitated too long.
I have never been so proud.
