Poem

You tell me what's illegal!
Nothing can be illegal to me because whatever has been done,
this life can never set me free, and that should be illegal for
those fame seeking legislators who sent me off to war.
They keep searching for the packet
I have hidden in my jacket.

Society can gaol me but that will never stop me.
for every touch is heaven and every smoke is peace.
These days you will see where I have been,
for the bottles been abused, and yesterday is news.

There's a woman often hurt, living in suburban Heidelberg,
raising our children on her own - in a rented home.
I took her to my nightmare until she couldn't bear,
to stand with me once more - beside me in my war.

I’m feeling the pain around Christmas,
or when the winter rain does fall.
I left hell to come home and live with my back against the wall -
The welcome mat's extended but I always feel I'm alone.
When you go to war - you never do come home.

Contorted faces that expired.
The Devil laughs in smoke and fire.
Exploding head with every shell.
Crooked fingers beckon me to hell -

My sights set on eternity.
Death is one step ahead of me.
The images, images, images of pain!
Every night I see them all again

That's why I'm here where I am.
She wasn't there so she can't understand -
but I thank her for her shoulder and her hand.
