Poem
I refuse to keep living a colorless life Wear black for business meetings, maybe blue White shirt, black skirt Even the colorless shoe Don’t dare touch your hair Remember how you were born Forget the bright and bold auburn Or else by some be scorned. Keep your nails short and natural Don’t dare try bright red Keep your toes bound and cold Man, this existence is dead. You’re much too dark for yellow Too large to wear bright red Wear dark clothes to cover your fat Or maybe gray instead. The living room of earth tones But I don’t live outside I want bold walls that say, “Hallelujah” Not lackluster walls that hide Not A kitchen that says, I’m bougie Dare not hint a color of life Keep it white, beige, or cream Even a colorless knife Bedrooms that say, “I conform!” Just tell me what’s the trend I WILL NOT add color I dare not bend! A bathroom that’s also colorless Because sophistication says, “Be soft.” But, my spirit says, “Celebrate Life,” Enjoy, play, explore, Paint the loft! I want to paint my bedroom purple Or maybe blue like the sky I want walls that express life Not a flat existence that makes me cry I want a kitchen that is pretty Filled with color and delight A living room that bursts with creativity Colors that excite your sight I want a porch that welcomes with love And brightens up even a gloomy day Steps that express my personality A house that colors the way Life is too short to be boring Express yourself as you want Forget the Joneses and the others Be brave, even color the font! I see why kids are so happy They wear yellow, green, red Then they color pictures And sleep in a colorful bed Maybe we should learn from them Enjoy life’s simplest things Wear a bright color today And don’t forget the bling-bling Do it for you Bright bold reds, yellows, and blue Color me silly Color me happy For God’s sake, Let me have some COLOR.
