~ A Halloween Poem ~


Just a walk in the forest, he'd said
  No cause for thoughts filled with dread...

                  ********

He'd raised his eyes to a sun flashing bright
  Eyes squinting at each ray of light

Blazing through openings midst the trees
  On the wings of a soft summer breeze

Sweet birds twittering melodious songs
  Inviting his feet to glide gaily along

                  ********  

Perchance you imagine our traveler lost
  Darkness abruptly descending
That he's perished in a storm-tossed
  Tragic, inevitable ending
 
                  ********  

But, my friend, our traveler was not lost
  Nor came along fierce storm to him toss
He turned around; returned whence he came
  Sun smiling down on him, heart all aflame

With love for his wife, so precious and fair
  Who had just finished a tear-stained prayer
And plunged the knife deep in her heart
  The note read ~ 'I can't stand we're apart'
