My dad's large hand would swallow mine
as together we would walk to the voting line
See neighbors and friends from everywhere
waiting patiently in line with a duty to share
Young man are you going to vote today
more than one adult ask as we made our way
Start him off young Robert show him now
democracy needs us all to vote and how
My grade school was our polling place
and I was glad to be with my dad, pride on my face
Step by step forward on the progress was slow
but no one was rushing patriotism on show
Finally our turn to sign and check in
are you democrat independent or republican
My dad showed his ID though all knew his name
and sign for his ballot just the same
He picked me up as we headed to the voting booth
closed the curtain now our moment of truth
The ballot was long so many names
My dad held my hand as we both proclaim
This guy is honest, she's done a good job
No one would vote for him crooked Rob
Hand on hand we together made our mark
filling out the ballot I repeated his remarks
State questions and justices to renew
together we read and voted after our review
We finished and he put me down
open the curtain the ballot box we found
I put it in the slot our duty profound
Robert he is growing fast
the poll workers said as we past
My dad held my little hand into his own
slowly we began our walk back home
Stoping now and then with a friend to chat
Voting day was important to all way back
Today when I vote I remember back then
how important to my dad was voting for him
No matter who you support or even why
please remember to vote so our republic survives
