Poem
sun streaming through the window nearest our bed . . . my love’s golden hair I am awakened by bird song. What a beautiful start to a brand new day. Having wakened before my darling, I gaze at him where he lies on his side, still snoozing and his head on the plump pink pillow matching my own. I lean over to smooth his blonde locks, and his eyes flutter open. With his deep gaze now resting on ME, I am filled with anticipation. We have planned wonderful activities for this day, for it is one of those rare weekdays when we have the time off work to spend an entire day in one another’s company. After a leisurely breakfast, we head out to the big lake of our region’s state park – a 3-hour drive! It is a hot summer season, and we have rented jet skis. When we arrive to the beach area, excitedly we launch ourselves onto the icy clean blue water. By now it is close to noon. Rarely have we gone out on jet skis, but after riding around on them a short while, we have the hang of it again! cutting through water beneath the sun’s blazing light . . . my love’s smile brightens After several hours of glorious wave-running, we dock the jet skis and head for the park’s small cafe. Conversation is flowing, and we are feeling so at ease. I notice my love’s bronzed arms have become even darker. Meanwhile, mine instead are turning pink! Time for more lotion! We return to the shore, where we frolick like children in the shallow. Then we lie back on our matching beach blankets on the sand, and I cuddle in the curve of my darling’s arm. Eyes closed, we drift into an easy slumber. We rest only a while because we need to take advantage of those jet skis, so back we go out onto the glistening blue of the lake’s cool water. Eventually, we guess the time to be nearly 6:00 p.m. Dusk will soon be falling, and we need to be back on the road, for duty awaits us in the morning. As we drive back home with the rented skis behind our small truck, we listen to our favorite radio station as we sing, as usual, “in tune” with one another, for even our favorite songs match up! Though it would have been romantic to have watched the sun setting back on the beach, we can still thrill to it as we approach our home. radio romance as sun slides behind mountains . . . my love’s eyes glowing Aug. 30, 2020 for the Let The Pens Flow - Haibun Poetry Contest of Jenish Somadas
