Poem
How much pain, Can one take? How much rain, Floods the lake? How much before the damn breaks? How long does immortality last? While we believe we cannot die, Before life takes us to task, And we realize we’re living a lie. We can and will die. If we pray day by day, Will that decrease the fear? Will it ever go away? Will it bring us closer to God’s ear? Family and friends dear, Suddenly not here, Anymore. Passed through death’s door. One more chance, To join with them in life’s dance. On more day or two, To hug them and say I love you. Time moves on almost mercilessly, And we move on mostly purposefully. We take it all for granted, But it’s not all granted what we take. Life is never forever enchanted, We either live for real of for fake, It’s in the choices we make. All too soon we are gone, And life marches on. Do you see how far you’re really gotten? While our memories are not so long, For all too soon we are forgotten. Forgotten names, Souls unsaved. Roads paved, Over the graves. Driveways, Where the living play. You can hear them say, “We only live for today”. How far do the living get? No time to pause and think. So just take another drink, And light another cigarette And just forget… If tomorrow comes, They’ll pay the sum, Continue to run, And play in the sun. What they call having fun. But when comes the dark, They will miss the hark, Of the morning lark, Time to pay for their mark. A penny for each eye, As they desperately, slowly slide. They cry and ask, “Why do we have to die?” The ferryman sighs, “It’s your time to ride.” We give ourselves over, Ever to the fantasy of immortality. But what is forever, In lost dreams and lost reality? But memories hold the times, I our souls and in our minds. Not just in a box of old pictures do they live again, But in our minds and hearts. For dear lost family and friends, Immortality starts, When their lives end. For as long as we remember them, Their lives never really end. But if we forget them over and over, They will live never more. How hard the tears we cried, How long the mourning does last. Our souls tested and tried, As we long for the past. From day’s dawn of morning light, To the dusk of day’s end. Into the darkest night, We succumb to fright like children. But fear not, We live on. Never to be forgot, After we are gone. We are never alone. Into the light we roam. Our names etched in stone. And we travel home. Death rides fast, On a pale steed. Life does not last, Beyond what we need.
