Poem
Dreams are but fancies of a deeper place Found in the realm of the mind asleep Played out like old films in a movie palace Starring phantoms freed from a dark, dusty keep What meaning bestowed save only the given By the dreamer or chosen confidants Spirit guidebooks, advice for living Interpret the trampling white elephants Navigating waters of seas unexplored Worlds fading in and out of existence Dancing with Sirens who will not be ignored Their songs call you onward without resistance Trying hard as you may not to run aground Seeking the beacon of light shining on the shore Steering your ship through the straights of Sandman Sound Where dreams and reality wage nightly war Merging with shadowy willow-the-whispers Walking in streams of unconscious thought Of things that are, things that may be, things that once were Of things yet to come, and things that are naught By dreams we have means of earthly escape Flights of fancy pursue with fate and sue with chance Endless journeys of time, space and mindscape In subconscious freedom exists a place to dance An alternate, timeless, ageless multiverse Where you are immortal for a limited time There time bends to accommodate your verse And the inhabitants all speak in riddles and rhymes Inside, shadows play up on the wall They dance and frolic and sing their songs Outside, hear the footsteps in the hall The ghosts of the past dance and sing along At night when my dreams come out to play And the creatures of the night hold court I know I have till the coming day To experience new worlds of a sort Inside your head while you sleep Are visions in the mind’s eye Misty mountains with castle keeps And you’re just learning to fly But what’s inside the castle keep That cannot be denied? Ideas and thoughts so dark and deep From which you can never hide Dreams may show you the direction to go in Dreams may show you what you’d like to do You can run, but in slow motion You can’t hide from what’s inside of you Dark shadows debut their plays on the stage Of a mind wrought with angst and confusion Wordsmiths put pen to old papyrus page To create a new world of illusion In the swirling, murky waters of my mind There lies a forgotten ancient ruin If you dare the old temple to find You must make sure you know what you’re doin’ You should follow your dreams Some strange old philosopher said As inspiring as that advice seems I’ve got an ache in my head… So I went back to bed
