THIS LADY AND ME This lady and me, In this place We would still be strangers, If it had not happened For when this lady had sat down; Next to me today, And being somewhat a chipper chappie be, With depression laid on for free, Having that kind of face Of always up for a nag, I could see straight away This lady was having a sad; Not glad road-kill sort of day. “You look kind of glum are you okay?” My opening words spoke, On this our first occasion, Of social intercourse, For in here It can be a lonely, lonely place, If you want or allow it to be, Always depends on the difficulty And the time of the day for most, Of what you are going through. Between this lady and me No time for idle conversation, “Not happy!” This lady’s reply came with a sigh, And a look of exasperation Coupled with hint of frustration, And a feeling of resignation spent, “In here over Christmas” Came the next refrain, “Not a great way to spend the day, And with all the friends I’ve made in here Gone out of here have they.” Then like all good politicians Or philosophers of the word, I politely and expertly changed the subject to, “What are your interests and what interests you?” “My interests let me see;” This lady had to contemplate and think about, And very carefully thought of her next answer to me, “You could say I like most sports, Rather partial to rugby league And scuba diving is another passion I adore, I do like to travel, And have spent Two years overseas Mainly in Canada, And I had trained to be a teacher Although I still retain an interest be, Today! Sadly! I feel there is a lack of hunger To be able to teach the word, And I hoping that in the future A Paramedic I will be.” When this lady paused, Her demeanor had somehow; Wonderfully changed to be In a far better place, So, what had been a gloomy face ‘twas a face of being lovely, And glad that she was alive; Opportunely forgotten Of what had had made her sad, Indeed, enjoying this time Of sincere communication, Where the stories of each, Had far reaching effects Into the souls of each, And as much as this lady imparted This old sailor lad enjoyed! Telling some of my own Of antidotes and tall tales of kind, Of where I had travelled and experienced, And many days of writing rhyme To add to the many books, I’d written. So, like all good stories This one did have to end, And as for each; I believe we had both been destined, To have an outreach Of an open communication channel reached.
