Poem
I want to go to Idaho I bet you never knew And Wyoming… and Hawaii… Oh, and North Dakota too!! I’ve been to all the other ones For once there was a time When I would tease the pull of Earth And upwards I would climb I used to fly those great big jets I dreamed of as a kid And many others just like you Also wish they did Well, wish no more, now close your eyes You’re in for something neat We’re going on an airplane ride From up in the pilot’s seat!! Now if you don’t mind, we’ll skip some things Like, “How does the airplane turn on?” And we’ll get right up to altitude On our cross-country marathon!! Okay, you can look now, we’re heading due west Cruising high overtop of the “Plains” And we’re only two hours from the Great Salt Lake Oh don’t worry, plenty of daylight remains Way out there, see the Rockies? Though they look pretty small As we near they’ll ascend to great heights And when we pass overhead we’ll see mountains of green Topped with snows of the purest of whites Across the western states we soar Vast palettes of different browns Where? Show me… oh, those way down there? They’re not ants, those are small little towns Why do the lakes and rivers shine like that? You’re right, they do look like they’re on fire It’s the reflection of the setting sun Nature’s herald for sky’s evening attire Oh my, there’s the sunset, isn’t it marvelous?? From up here, it’s a sight to behold The pinks, the blues, all those orange hues!! No silly, the sun’s not made out of gold Onward!! Forward!! With purpose, we fly The twilit West Coast looms ahead Now let’s check… good, since we’ve plenty of fuel We won’t stop, we’ll keep going instead There now, we’ve reached the Pacific And the sun finally bid us goodnight So it’s time to turn this grand airplane around And head back on the long eastbound flight We’re going to fly on a northerly route I hope later on you’ll see why But for now, let’s simply gaze at stars And marvel at the sky There’s Orion!! And the Pleiades!! Cassiopeia is way over there!! And there’s Ursa Major… oh, I thought you knew That’s Latin for “Great She-Bear” Now look down from her tail, tell me, what do you see? Indeed, the Big Dipper, in all of its glory But do you know how to find the obscure Little one? That’s okay, another time, another story There!! Look to the left and look real hard It’s one of the rarest of sights No, that’s not curtains blowing in the sky They’re called the “Northern Lights” That’s why I wanted to fly on a northerly route You see them best from there And believe me, it’s not very often that you do But tonight God has answered my prayer That faint yellow line growing bright in the east? That’s the dawning of a new day Which reminds me, now is the perfect time To take a moment and pray To thank God for all of the beauty He has made for us to view But for me do you know what the best gift was? It was that I got to see it with you! Well, I hate to say it but the time has come Our journey must now end You say you want to do it again? Any time, my friend…
