as a cild it hat often been the box that mattered
          
          it gave shelter and comfort and held no surprises

                    simple cardboard and plenty of space to hide in

I grew older as my tree of life branched and lured

          adventure excitement challenges and drawbacks

                    and I wished for bold ribbons as I tied the knot

at first roots became strong and mastered all storms
 
          good job healthy marriage and wonderful children

                    love money security travel and a sound pension plan

then she poked my carton and punctured my soul

‘it’s all your fault and I shall put our vows in a drawer’

‘what have I done wrong’ ‘you must find out yourself’

the container became hampered the package no solace

          Pandora left me to fight my battle alone and confused

                    the cellophane tape a reminder of what would not stick

no ‘wishing you well card’ just abuse disrepair and rejection

          callous contempt silence and a toxic mix of anger and pain

                    venomously bestowed with self-righteous heartless ingratitude

the repository turned into a rock bottom prison

          with doubts incrimination depression and self-harm

                    tied a string to the wrapper of morbid resolve

‘think out of the box’ suggested all reason

‘feel what is left emotions speak from inside’

meaning can be found in composed surrender

                    I retrieved the empty shell from the dusty attic

          licked wounds and dried out glue into adhesion

left the torn edges and sealed shredded margins

                    self help manuals DIY kits and good fortune

          talking therapies medication and a kind Buddha

breathed faded remains into resilience and revised dreams

                   I was free to elope with a compassionate soulmate

         shared hurtful memories boudoir kindness and care

embarked on a new path of passion for rudder and sail

                   with hindsight my ex gave me a most wonderful present

          an unintended blessing in disguise of mad destruction

liberation from vile abandonment and choice of fresh love

today the parcel is full of magic abandon and wonderment

blister packs cushion marvelous harmony happiness and joy

‘so thank you for bursting the bubble and giving me my Self’
