"I Can't Breathe I Am"



I can’t breathe
when you 
paint the words 
“Flow” 
on my throat
when the words 
are trapped 
and I am gagged

I can't breathe
when you're kneeling
in prayer 
on my neck 
singing a gentile 
white hooded 
hymn proudly 
with your vacant eyes
staring at a camera 
soulless,
transfixed

I can’t breathe
when you cover my face
with your fine hands holding 
a tattoo pen to my forehead 
the words read
like a hexagram
Black Star
You're following 
Religion, 
bewitched

I can’t breathe
a life in between 
your sterile rules,
regulations and lines
I am abstract, yet
a puppet whose heart strings
are held by you 
I AM, 
You, the grey matter between
black and white, 
no form nor colour, 
bland

I can’t breathe
tarred and feathered 
I run, gone all native and 
civilised holding a gun
I am a Kaleidoscope
All colours 
bleeding in the tears
shed by the sorrowful
Sun

I can’t breathe
when you hold 
the reigns of my life
who I Am, Am I 
to be considered 
at all, in every bastion 
of an imprisoned humanity
to be vain enough
to consider myself fully free 
from phrophesied cruelty

I am the daughter 
of Judah
wearing a forgotten tale
I am the son 
listening with a mind
glistening like a black star 
where the soul has been erased 
the mind pre-programmed,
suspended not animated, 
stale

I can’t breathe
I am holding the same 
colour in a helix strand as you,
I AM,
a sharp thorn in a message to be 
translated not by 
a god
but within the image of 

A Man
