Let's be reasonable                                                                                                                             and tease me not.                                                                                                                  Why, the talk of it;                                                                                                                                                         the very thought of it                                                                                                                     is rather foreign to me.                                                                                                                                            "Those lazy days of Summer"?*

Where were they when I needed them?
As a child, I longed for their appearance.                                                                                                                       I would have delighted to make their acquaintance.                                                                                                     Were they waving among the weeping willow trees,                                                                                              casting shadows, and blowing cool breezes in my direction?                                                                                             I think not, but if they were, how rude of those lazy summer days?                                                                                  Did they not think that I would have loved to share in their life of ease?                                                                              I would love to have slept and slumbered throughout the hot summer.
Why did they ignore our sweaty faces, never bothering to introduce themselves? They could have filed a government complaint against excessive child labor. Perhaps they had no interest in share-cropping farmers like us?                                                                       

My summers of youthful days were much about labor, and the very thought                                                of laziness was anathema and unwritten forbidden law that would have                                                 given birth to absolutely nothing but trouble for me.  I tell you, laziness,                                                     especially the summer sort, was an enemy both foreign and domestic.                                                          For that reason, I was never given an opportunity to be lazy, and in                                                                      my neck of the woods, everybody worked.
