Poem

Born of Liriope, sired by Cephissus he was a beauty.
Narcissus, not a king, but one with a hunter’s duty.
Women followed him from many kingdoms away.
He was more handsome each and every day.

With golden curls and clear eyes of steely blue.
His eyes appreciated beauty; he loved them too.
He was followed by one into the deep black woods.
He felt her presence, and he knew she was the goods.

Who is it? He called. Who is it? She called back, yet dim. 
Her name was Echo, and she was clearly smitten with him.
She caught up and tried to give him a heartfelt hug.
He pushed her away, and her soul was broken; the lug.

But I thought you liked all things beautiful, she cried out.
Yes, I do he said but it has to be my choice, so do not pout.
Some had already taken their own lives to prove their devotion.
Narcissus the hunter, was truly the center of great commotion.

Aphrodite saw him push Echo away, and it made her mad.
She decided to punish him, for she was the goddess of revenge, quite bad.
She lured him to a pool on a warm summer’s day.
He peered into the water and was swept immediately away.

He immediately fell completely and utterly in love with his reflection.
Where he was at his youthful best, not a single imperfection.
He could not be lured away by food, women or drink.
He stayed by that pool until his mind could not think.

Eventually Narcissus turned into a gold and white flower.
Losing all sense of hunter ways or human kind of power.
Echo remains in the glens, calling out to whoever comes by.
The story told by the gods in the mythological sky.
