Poem

In quietness at me doctor’s surgery,
I felt as nervous as can be.
You see I’m visiting the Doctor
with nothing wrong with me.
I’m concerned about me good wife,
because every time she’s near,
I keep thinking she’s ignoring me,
but could be going deaf I fear.

Our Doctor took a long deep breath,
and alleviated fear,
mentioning she could be suffering
wax ‘build up’ in her ear,
“So before we start to panic her,
one test that you should try,
to check out if her hearing’s bad,
and if so, we’ll work out why.”

“Stand some distance from your wife,
and ask her what’s for tea.
If she doesn’t answer move up closer,
and then repeat your plea.
Keep repeating this same question,
until she does answer you.
If her hearings bad then you could stand,
as close as a foot or two.

So when I walked through our front door,
I looked out for me wife,
and she stood with her back to me,
cutting veggies with a knife.
I called out, “What’s for tea m’dear?”
But there is no reaction,
so I took a few steps closer and 
could not get satisfaction.

On a further four occasions then,
a little louder I repeated,
“What have you cooked for tea m’dear?”
with nearness being metered,
until finally three feet away,
she shouted in me ear -
“For the seventh bloody time,
steak and veggies - can’t you hear?”
