Mommy,Mommy, who took you away?
Don't you know I need a warm bath and I so want to play?

Where are you, Mommy? You were not even old!
Daddy told me a virus took you.
How can I cover you with a warm blanket, when it gets cold?

Who will tuck me in each starlit night?
I am so terribly lonely, Mommy!
For a ten year old this is a lonely fright.

They won't let me see my Nana at all.
I can only see her though a window, Mommy!
And oh ~how our hot, shared tears do fall.

We don't have real school at all, maybe not even in fall!
My friends, Mommy I cannot see, just call?
Living with masks, no company, no Mommy.
Behind brick walls till I am ninety-three and my childhood 
lost in fear and misery!

My best friends miss you, too!
Your warm hugs and yummy bakings.
Grown-ups hide from each other Mommy, too.
They argue, they get drunk, they cry.

I kneel in my jammies, with my hands on the window sill.
And wish, beyond wishing that the world was the same again.
But most of all, that you were with us, still!

Will I ever play jump rope again or is life on a Chromebook 
where my story ends?
I cannot even hug my best friend, Joanie!
Daddy said this summer we must stay inside, there will be
no riding on dappled ponies.

Daddy misses you so much!
I hear him crying in the kitchen, holding your pretty
coffee mug.
We try to smile and do play with the doggie on the new rug.

I will talk to you before bed, Mommy of my heart.  
I want to be in heaven with you, skipping on stars.
And, once again, having a happy, young girl heart!
