GOOD-BYE TO A DEAR FRIEND Soon I’ll have to say good-bye to a friend I dearly love, But I’ll only say good-bye, for we’ll meet in heaven above. I have grown to trust this friend, for in him I did confide, Now I will not have him there sitting in that chair beside. I will miss the talks we had on the subjects of all kinds As we spoke our thoughts so free as they poured out of our minds. But I’ve found through all those days that a faith we mutually share, So now though he goes away, I’ll still feel like he is there. We may separate by miles, but our minds will still be one As we dedicate our lives to our faith in God’s dear Son. Though he will be far away in a land so vast and bare, He will not escape my thoughts nor my earnest, fervent prayers. I will pray that as he goes on this venture far and new That he’ll keep God in his sight and His purpose in his view. And I know he’ll pray for me as he leaves his friends behind, For I know that through these days he has been a friend of mine. Though it hurts to say good-bye and my eyes may shed a tear, I know if he’s in God’s will, he need have no care or fear. There is much unknown he’ll face as he goes to this new land, But I know he’ll see the Lord helping in each of his plans. It’s not hard to say good-bye to a lot of folks we know, But a friend like he has been--it is hard to see him go. He’s been like a brother dear, an inspiration when I’m down, A face of warmth and full of cheer when my face is full of frowns. A sense of humor and of fun with the quips and plays on words, And your comments so profound about something you had heard. But the best time of them all was the time he took to pray As I faced a trip abroad when my father passed away. His reward will be so great, and I thank God for his life, Now I say to him good-bye, with prayers for him and his wife I hope as the years go by and he raises his two boys, They will be friends just like him and will bring to someone joy. And I pray that he will find in this new place he will live Someone else he can befriend with this same life that he gives.
