"The Precipice"



In the Autumn 
she wore a wedding veil
A cold winter would lift it
Kiss her lips passionately to 
speak words of 
LOVE
on a 
late roll call

“Well, that’s insanity for you” 
some snakes would hiss
others rapture-faced
on bent knees
plastered her walls 
with their 
revelation graffiti

bible passages
from well read and torn pages
about this, this, this and that

swirling immature brandy 
around in their black rimmed
balloon glasses
they trilled and quibbled
like sparrows and bad poets do
hypocrites with their oaths 
and swollen egos
chewing their fats

“What would you know with your safe words?”
trial and error tasting
testing the boundaries 
of tired laureates 
and other demons 
you’re just in it for 
mud slinging and giggles

While some wrote of lack lustre romance
seriousness stepped in 
and considered 
the burnings 
and the slow hellish journeys 
of others 

No Salem Witches
but trials nevertheless
criminals and families
Just an ordinary day 
gone to Hell
too much time on their hands
you can tell

Some looking towards Qibla
Others turned towards the clouds
Many towards glowing screens where 
they fall into dark tunnels
the holes peeling layers 
from glass onions the
walls to hide behind 
and watch others bleed
their marching feet 
as they make their day
industrious not free

In the evening 
over a dinner and tv
the vision of
thirteen stories high
Red Hell dust storms 
prophetically turning 
day into night
blowing in with hell-bent hunger 
to eat all the sleeping towns

Some speak in tongues
they say what comes to mind
automatic writ 
Le grand folle
near or miss
'tis all part of 
The Signs

Magik rears its ugly head
Zozo 
Stands firm and spits
Crowley

Divinity with match sticks struck
to blessed black requiem candles 
a Mass
that lights a fire 
to open eyes 
ointment beatified and spread 
with the softly spoken prayers
of unsure scryers pressing 
holy Jesus fingers through 
gormless foreheads 
anointing closed eyelids
unbelieving this is
IT

Humans 
all naive
in the grand mix
holy water shot 
from a fire hose 
dark alcohol
rubbed into 
numb hearts
salt into the wounds
of precious where-art-thous?
nobody really cares or knows
"Is anyone listening?", the joker says

What foul business is this?
Revelations evolving
unfolding 
or 
just a bad dream
when you go to sleep 
lost in the
dimensions
of another transit 

Everyone is sleeping
dreams open in minds
we all meet in our dreams
standing on the 
edge
barrel of the gun 
Russian Roulette 
a hidden game 
at the back of our heads

Some then choose to 
Genuflect 

A last attempt
1 minute before midnight
Before the plunge 
to 
the next 
eclipse 

Looking for the sign 
that reads,

"EXIT"

Standing 
Waiting
with all the naive 
lost Romantics 

Toes gripping tight 
to the edge
no ropes held or bound
some hold crucifixes
others laugh transfixed
