Poem
GOD STEPPED IN THE WAY I was running down the highway of my sin unto my doom, And the outcome from my choices was a life of endless gloom. I had wandered into darkness from the light of righteous day And was groping for an answer, then God stepped in the way. I was searching for fulfillment, never being satisfied; Had I kept on that pathway, without God I would have died. I had gone quite far from Jesus on the path I went astray, And I could have gone much further, but God stepped in the way. I had fooled myself to thinking I had made my peace within, And so many of my friends were unaware of all my sin. But Someone was ever watching, for He knew some day I’d pray, And as soon as I cried, “Save me,” then God stepped in the way. I can say now I’m not proud of all the wicked things I did That I kept well hid from others, but to God you were not hid. I know the scars I’m bearing, that’s the price I have to pay, Yet I could have been much worse off, but God stepped in the way. It is easy to be belittled and intimidated be For the wasted years I dabbled in all sin’s misery, And it sometimes gets me wondering if I’m really His today, But every time I’m weakening, my God steps in the way. How well I do remember the conviction of before When I really wasn’t saved and really didn’t know the Lord, When I tried to talk to Jesus and a barrier seemed to stay, Then I know I was rewarded when God stepped in the way. I diligently had sought Him, but in a selfish way By morals of some others who’d taught me how to pray, By giving of my income, by being in church Sunday, But it really wasn’t settled until God stepped in the way. God still lets me make choices, He won’t violate my will, But now I want to serve Him and His plan for me fulfill. And I’ll thank Him up in heaven in that never ending day That He was kind and patient when He stepped in the way.
