Poem
The Stars and Moon had long been friends but this was set to change. As the Moon just up and walked away moving swiftly out of range. And what was left was dark and void and this was rather strange. So nothing moved upon the Earth except in a tone of partial grief. As Man and Beast both loathed the night as a beggar fears a thief. And most would wait for the Sun to rise to give them some relief. But two were not so lucky and must travel through the night. To tempt the ghosts and shadows who would fill them both with fright. But their cause was just and righteous which gave solace to their plight. A small Child and a Buffalo had left the safety of the farm. And were intent on self-protection so were walking arm and arm. Muttering various incantations to protect them both from harm. 'The night is thick with discontent and sure to cause us stress. We must hurry,' the Child said, 'And find the right address. For our path is filled with dreary things and bound to hinder our success.' 'Take heart and fill your soul with valor,' the Buffalo did entreat. 'We must steady what nerve we have for the dangers we must meet. And if our plan be beyond our grasp... others will rise from our defeat.' From the shadows... a dark voice cried out, 'Turn back... your cause is lost. The thing you seek is out of touch and not worthy of the cost. And who are you to tempt such fate where better ones have crossed?' The Child and the Buffalo ran to escape what they could hear. And as the dismal voice grew dimmer... they overcame their fear. But wished the journey was at an end and the prize they sought was near. 'But if the thing be out of place and not found by Man or Beast. What hope is there?' the Child moaned. 'To give cause to our release. For the state of where we find ourselves, the thing may be deceased.' The Buffalo grew strangely quiet at the thought his friend had pressed. And the fear the thing could not be had filled him with some distress. But he would keep and hide such doubts like those the Child expressed. The Buffalo roared, 'We complain too much as we are both steadfast and strong. And even though I share your fear of a night that is far too long. We should fling our courage upon this dread and raise our voice in song.' 'Are you crazy?' The Child whispered, 'Such noise will lead to our demise. For there are wicked things that itch and creep and long to hear our cries. And if they should learn of our plans... we all will surely die.' 'We have made our bed,' the Buffalo said, 'We now reap what we have sown. And risk this time... our mortal souls against the wickedness life has shown. But if the thing be within our reach... then our journey be well-known.' The small Child and the Buffalo trudged through the growing gloom. Putting aside such faustian desires and their harbingers of doom. And hoped beyond hope to find the thing and not some specter's tomb. 'I am told by those who claim... the thing we seek is gone and far beyond our grasp. Do you possibly think,' the Child said, 'We were silly to even toil with this task?' 'I'm not worried,' the Buffalo replied, 'But I knew you had to ask.' The light of day slowly awakened as the two stood before the door. And both felt a strange sensation where they had been this way before. The Buffalo took the Child's hand... they entered and walked across the floor. They moved forward into a blinding light as two creatures great and small. And the fear that haunts the rest of us will disappear once we hear the call. And as with the small Child and the Buffalo... the Grace of God awaits us all. The End *For those who may be interested. I will be posting my cartoon, 'Bob's Your Uncle' on my homepage. A new one will appear every second day or so.
