Poem
I’ve never experienced hallelujah or come-to -Jesus moments like I’m sure many religious folks do. I’ve never spoken in tongues (nor would I want to). I don’t believe I was ever moved much by the Holy Spirit in church although I have been moved by stories of compassion told by Sunday school teachers and from seeing kind acts performed in a variety of places by both humans and even by animals! I find inspiration in sunsets, the ocean, and beautiful scenery. I would hope that means I am feeling the Holy Spirit. But something spoke to my spirit quite strongly when - after a terrible sudden wind storm and driving blindly home in the rain - the storm just as suddenly subsided and was replaced by a rainbow spreading over our mountains. The moment I got home, I sat down to write one of my first poems to come to me in a flash: “God is Good.” And though the Spirit did not speak to me, I believe it may have guided my hands on the steering wheel of my car when somehow I got into a fix madly maneuvering myself between two cars on the freeway and there was NO lane for me to drive in between the two cars! I still have no idea how I escaped that one unscathed. Other times I have had blow-outs on the freeway and then found myself delivered into the hands of good Samaritans. Maybe those times the Spirit was looking after me. I believe I was led by the Holy Spirit when after a week of desperate prayer and two days away from having a stent put in my breast, I found myself in the house of my next door neighbor who happened to be a renowed doctor from Canada. Upon hearing that I was set to have chemotherapy in addition to radiation treatments (even though my tumor was already removed from me) he and his scientist collegue, whom he quickly got me in touch with, advised me that I absolutely should not undergo chemotherapy treatments. Also I believe that after much prayer, I was led later on to find supplements to relieve me of at least one of the terrible side effects of an unnecessary drug given me by the same oncologist who had wanted me to do chemo. Sometimes I feel the Holy Spirit in certain rare and powerful scenes of movies. Something spoke to my spirit profoundly at the very final scene of a movie called “American Beauty.” In this scene you can hear the main character, Lester, eloquently and almost poetically soliliquize on life. As he expresses gratitude for all the simple beauties of life, his just-then murdered soul drifts upward toward heaven. God knows me very well- to have touched my soul so deeply through a movie.
