Poem
Mardi was at the Darby; Yet he was not invited to the party; Very upset at what he could not get; He went over to the teller to make a bet. “Mardi, you came to the Darby,” the teller did say; Which made him reply without a lie; “I want to see what those horses will pay.” “Well number nine worked out last week posting a good time his name is Chalk of Nuts and he has nice guts,” the teller reported Mardi stared at all the numbers tryin to do some sortin. “I will take the three one just for fun here is two pences I hope he gets over the fences.” Then there was a rang and off they went like a bang! “Go number three I do believe!” As the four-legged mass ran so fast, Everybody cheered taking swigs of their beer. As for Mardi he took things in stride since his horse did not try. Due to being slow the horse did not come in win place or show and Mardi decided it was time to go. All of a sudden, a Genie appeared from nut tin Without any teeth the Genie did smile Knowing Mardi’s horse was the last in the pile “Mardi, my friend,” he said with a grin “you made a bet and that made you upset.” “I did not win, so there goes my gin,” he said responding to the Genie’s grin. “But did you have fun watching the horses run?” “Yes, I did but it would have been nice if my horse lit up the board with a nice price.” “It does not matter whether that piece of paper is a winner what really matters is where you are going to dinner.” “You see my dear Mardi the reason you were not invited to the party is due to the fact you have to understand the idea of going to the track.” “People come here to watch and enjoy shouting during this outing.” “Isn’t it winning money the real reason to watch the horses runnin?” “Yes, winning makes people come and does add to the fun, but it is the friends that are made here during the year, so Mardi make a bet on the Darby and if the horse comes in you will win.” Mardi did go back to the teller to make a bet taking the odds-on favorite to win the Darby being that it was being raced when everybody was partying. And like it was written in the form the winner was making its way down the stretch, past everyone who invested in his horse powered jets. “Go Favorite Go,” was heard throughout the setting despite no money was really going to be made during this betting. Mardi watched as his horse won, and he had fun despite knowing not much money was going to be the sum. “Well, that was exciting,” he said to himself with a little bit more wealth. The Genie was right if you play the odds in this game You will have excitement in the stretch screaming your horse’s name. Win, Place, Show I dunno but in the end the races are a fun place to go.
