Poem
“On the day that you were born, the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true, so they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue.” - From “(They Long to Be) Close to You” by the Carpenters When I was very young, I would hear songs like “Johnny Angel” and I’d sing along with them imagining the type of love such songs portrayed. Soon it was 1970 and “Close to You” topped the charts as number one hit. About that time, my own Johnny Angel appeared in my life. “A dream come true” was he with his cute delicate features and soft sweet eyes, just like those angelic features described in the song “Close to You,” a song which conjures up for me angels dancing with joy to have created such a beautiful boy as was my Johnny. Like those angels, I danced with joy upon meeting Johnny at a church dance far from my city. Johnny was not just beautiful on the outside. His inside was beautiful as well. Sensitive and caring, he worried excessively about his loved ones. At the young age of 15 he had already been developing ulcers from the stress of worrying about the possibility of his parents divorcing. Because I did not live in his city, I could not maintain a relationship with him for longer than a year, and our letter-writing to each other gradually ceased. The summer after graduation, he came to my city to say goodbye to me because he was leaving on a mission for the church. I do not know where he went. I learned later that his parents divorced, but not one acquaintance of mine from his city is able to tell me what became of Johnny. It’s as if he vanished from this world! I picture Johnny no longer an earth angel. . . his soul untroubled Aug. 29, 2019 Inspird by Luloo’s quote: "Angels danced the day you were born, and they wept when they welcomed you home" (this is mostly a true story. I just embellished a few minor details such as having “Close to You” playing the night we met. It did play later that summer of my short-lived romance with John Spencer)
