Poem
Grandma, you are loved so much And words cannot express The ways in which you’ve brought me joy For, through you I’ve been blessed But I will try in my own way To share your legacy And let those who come after know Just what you mean to me You’ve given cherished memories Of fun-filled childhood days And in my heart you always will Have such a special place Where scents and sounds spring back to life Where treasures I recall Of Christmases and Thanksgivings When I was very small Of plastic chattering teeth And of traveling so far Seeing you, Grandma, was worth Those long days in the car You taught me how to play poker With pennies, shiny and brown And let me play at the cemetery On your side of town The smell of fresh-brewed coffee Still reminds me of you today And cookie jars that overflow Recall your generous way And even when you cropped my hair As short as any lad I know that it was done with love Now it doesn’t seem so bad You taught me so much, Grandma In your encouraging way You showed I had a lot to give And I use that still today So thank you for the years you’ve spent Giving one little girl Everything she’d need To be a woman in the world © Donna Golden, 2008 (Inspired by Lisa’Mitchell’s stories of Nellie Agnes Christensen)
