Poem

Like a sudden gust of wind, my words were too strong
And in no time at all, I knew that I was wrong
My words were few but hurtful and insensitive
And forever sealed in my mind are his words in reply

Following him to his room, I saw and felt the pain in his eyes
when he loudly shouted four words to me, "Not from you dad!"
I slowly backed away from his doorway, wishing that I could take back
my critical words, but it was too late. It was then that I quickly realized
that it was not too late to apologize. So I found a place of quiet and wrote
these words of apology:

Jem.
When I walked away from your door, I wanted to cry.
You would think that I knew better than to approach
you in that way-insensitive to your feelings.
I'm so sorry son.  Please forgive me.

You guys are not kids anymore, and it's probably best
to not speak my opinions if you don't ask for them.
I'm 69, and we need for my latter years to be good for you.
It hurts inside that I hurt you with my words tonight.
