Poem

Who among us can walk without shadows from cradle to grave?
Who’s not affected by the light we crave?

Was anyone born without parents or kin?
Or know when life starts and truly ends?

Is it really all over when the heart beat fades
Or do we leave our bodies when we hit the grave? 

I wonder sometimes how connected we are
To our mothers, fathers and others afar.  

From the roll of the dice and games we played
To the sounds of music and prayers we prayed.

From the blood in our veins and the ways we speak
And the color of our hair to the things we seek.   

Like shadows cast on a moon-lit night 
From the heavens above and out of sight.

Shadows that speak in a tongue-less dream
That looks like you and laughs like me.

But in the end is someone near 
We once knew well and held them dear. 

Until their time to leave this realm 
This earthly plane they loved so well. 

And took them to that place above
Where the shadows name is God’s pure love. 

And cast it down in shades of gray 
On cold dark nights where memories lay.
