Poem
My greatest one-night stand occurred on a drizzly, spring Friday night, my long-term girlfriend had let me, I meant to drink her away right. Went down to a club I knew well, just to drink, wanted nothing more, then came this cute slip-of-a-girl, breathing hard from the mad dance floor. She smiled and said,”I’m Lindy,” fixing me with such hungry eyes that it pierced my break-up haze, couldn’t look away if I’d tried. I’m not an unattractive man, many times I’d picked a girl up for nothing more than mindless fun, but that night I was feeling rough. I tried to be this woman off, but then she ordered me to drink, “I’ve been where you are,”she declared, “sometimes it’s best just not to think.” I shrugged and knocked the whiskey back, and let her lead me out to dance, we stayed an hour, then rushed out desperate to get in each other’s pants. I won’t tell the torrid details, just say it was pretty damn hot, but the sex itself, if I’m honest, I pretty much quickly forgot. It was afterwards, in my bed, that sweet Lindy and I did talk, the strange woman even listened when I told of my recent loss. But it soon turned to better things, she loved travel and old poetry, hiking and fast cars and good wine, Lindy kept getting better to me. We found so much to talk about that we conversed straight through ’till morn, even made breakfast together, our plates were by waffles adorned. When she got up to say goodbye I asked if I could call her some time, she said,”I don’t think that we should, what ever could top a night so fine? Why ruin such a memory by subjecting it to the real world?” She kissed my forehead, gave a grin, then out of my house walked that girl. It was not easy thinking that I would never see her again, hard to just pass the whole night off, none of it made all that much sense, to give up all that potential out of fear that it may not compete with one better-than-average night, such reasoning did baffle me… Nevertheless I did lay off the bars and the clubs for a bit, until some friends wanted to go out, I figured I’d have fun with it. We went to the very same club, and I saw seated at the bar the same petite, lovely woman, her eyes locked on me from afar. She made her way throughout the mad crush until once again she was close, said,”I’ve been here every night, hoping that you would, well…you know…” I just kissed her, held her quite tight, not wanting to risk an escape, Lindy just melted in my grasp, we’ve been together since that day.
