Poem
I step into the temple in search of painted dreams Figures wrapped in irresistible shine they come to life within their fresco prisons A kaleidoscope of painted saints powerless to answer the prayers of mortals I sit in my darkest hope and worry breathing in God’s unfathomable presence I search for calm in my ever present discontent while feeling habitually ignored I meet the smiles written within ancient ink those previous joys that I long to encounter I see cross stations occupied by crowds as they wait to exhale the aroma of their indifference They dive into the oblivion of deceptive joy Each one grabs at feelings of fulfillment and freedom served from the Alter of Hope “Bless you my Child” “Take this” “Eat this” dreamers longing to ingest the Son They sense the shortness of their time within life’s space. Afterwards we will share the peace At small tables we will gather There we will talk about the destiny of everything We will pluck meaning from articles written in magazines a new kind of glossy poverty that rises from the sobs of first class paper We will transform the meaningless into prophecies while starring into the bottom of empty coffee cups Meanwhile closed bibles remain close at hand ever present symbols of our pretentious piety We will quiver at our amazing predictions following the flow of feelings with a sigh Top shelf thoughts of our greatness repopulating volumes of forgotten pages Or will we faithfully wait for encounters with pilgrims? Will we find depth in our yearnings? Is the King’s Garden overgrown with our opulence? He will not be infected by the limitation of our imagination! Let us open the eternal book gaze upon the Kingdom in the clouds Let’s taste unimaginable daring “Why is there something at all, rather than nothing?” Enquire men of mud, occupy your shine be enlightened by your true courage Yes, choose to touch the untouchable secrets of God! For Tania Kitchen’s Trophy Worthy Contest. It’s hard to tell you why my poem is trophy worthy because it feels like bragging. For me this piece deals with our humanity and our tentative relationship with God and the sacred. I feel the imagery connects to the past and the future. As humans we want to belong yet we struggle against the essence of who we are. I feel this portrays our conflict and still their is a hint of resolution. I hope you enjoy reading it. Ironically this was written on April 1st 2019.
