How I would fix the Second Amendment

First I want to say
I was in the military and a member of the NRA.

In 2008 A guy named Heller wanted to carry his gat             
But the Supreme Court wanted to question that.

The Amendment said only "the militia had the right to bear arms."
To protect a standing army from taking their farms.

Heller didn't think that was right
So it came down to a court fight.

Judge Ginsburg said it was OK when our nation was new.
To arm our militiamen as other protectors were few.

But I want you to know
She voted No.

The Court took a vote - came out four to four in a tie
Chief Justice Scalia, presiding, was the one to decide.

Judge Stevens said "The decision was wrong and debatable"
Many now agree it was insatiable.

Traveling with a gun before was a criminal dare
Now you can almost anywhere.

Gun violence has killed thousands - take note
All because of Scalia's vote.

Yes, he gets my criticism
Yearly kills forty thousand citizens.

I am now on the fence 
About carrying guns for self defense.

Too many are used for solving disputes
In old days it was done with fists or law suits.

So what do we do?
Here is my view:

Military weapons for civilians are illegal
Just the same as killing a bald eagle.

I say keep your gun as the Court verdict read
And arm the Militia as our forefathers said.

But our militia is our National Guard
For whom I have the highest regard.

So I have a caveat which isn't hard.
Travel with a gun, you must join the Guard

They require age, mental, and  physical tests
Be a U.S. citizen and felonies must confess.

To prove you have passed all that
Carry Guard ID, wear uniform shirt and hat.

Gun deaths should drop dramatically
And a strong civil defense it will be.
