Poem
The photograph that Tim had shown me a few hours earlier certainly did not do it justice. From what I could see it was a large triangular shape on three legs which were all at a forty five degree angle and about five feet off the ground. I estimated the length to be about thirty feet long and after walking all around noticed the one side was about twenty feet in length which told me it was the back of the craft, it was rounded around the edges and I noticed towards the front it was slightly tapered down to a point. Apart from the legs it was shiny silver and it looked like it was made of solid mercury. I estimated the height of it above the legs to be about seven or eight feet high. I could not see anything that showed a door way of any kind iand I still could not believe what I was looking at and decided this was not something that was made on earth. I wondered if it was friendly or hostile, was there some form of life on board and if so were we being watched. The area around it was really cold and there was still a low humming noise emitting from it. Everyone present were performing some kind of task, measuring it, checking for any radiation leaks and taking samples of the soil where the legs had made contact with the ground and taking more photographs. Also there were four armed soldiers around it and the whole scene looked like something out of one of those science fiction movies from the fifties. Would we be able to find a way in I wondered, and if we did the technology would put us way ahead of everyone else here on earth. In the distance I could hear the odd burst of small arms fire and the occasional explosion this was keeping up with the pretence that war games were taking place in the area. Nicholas called out to us and said to come back to the camp to discuss how best to move forward with the operation The four of us headed back and took off our hazmat suits and followed Nicholas to one of the porta cabins. We all sat down and were joined by others who I learned were scientists and physicists all top men and women in their field along with other members of the military. On the wall of the porta cabin were pictures taken of the craft from every angle and Nicholas then opened the meeting asking all of us for suggestions on what to do next, he added that other countries had detected the signals and questions were being asked and it wouldn't be too long before they came looking for answers and said that we need to move fast and went on to say that the American SETI program detected the signals about two months ago and it is the only nation we are sharing this with and added that two scientists' from N.A.S.A were on their way to join us and would be with us hopefully by the end of the week. He then caught my eye and asked me for my thoughts and I said "In my opinion this is not Russian or Chinese or from any other power here on earth, we don't know if it's friendly or hostile so we need to tread with extreme caution., I think we should try and communicate with it first before taking any action that might be seen as hostile, if there is any life on board and feels it is under attack then we could provoke it in to defending it self and I dread to think what weaponry it has on board" one of the men at the back said that a powerful drill was being brought in from a diamond mine in South Africa and should arrive today and failing that we should use small explosives to try and gain entry. I was horrified when I heard that and thought that this was not going to end well, it was agreed that we would try and communicate with it first although G.C.H.Q was continuously trying to so, but as yet to no avail, I did not think that we would fare any better given the fact that they were the experts in the field of communication and had all the state of the art equipment at their disposal. After an hour the meeting concluded and we again put on our hazmat suits and headed down to the site, radios were put in place and all sorts of frequencies were used to try and communicate with the craft, speech, Morse code and music were all tried but disappointingly nothing worked. That afternoon the drill arrived and it was brought down to the site and set up, Nicholas gave the order to start up the generator and put the drill into position, I said the best place to attempt it would be somewhere underneath and in the middle as the front and rear could contain vital components that could get damaged in the drilling attempt, Nicholas agreed and the drill was set up underneath, I had never seen such a monster drill and if that didn’t do the job then nothing would, the engineers moved the drill against the hull and started it up, it gave off a loud screeching noise of metal against metal and everyone stood around in anticipation. After five minutes of drilling smoke could be seen coming off the body of the drill and the drill bit that could drill through anything was glowing an orange red and then with a bang broke off falling on to the ground setting the grass alight, an engineer used an extinguisher and put out the small fire that had started. We moved forward and looked underneath where they had attempted to bore into the hull and there was not a mark on it, we all just stared in disbelief. We were all summoned back and taking off our hazmat suits sat in for another meeting on the next course of action, the general consensus was to use explosives as there were not many options left, although I wasn’t happy with their decision I was forced to go along with it, three Royal engineers were given the task of setting up the explosive charges and at first light the next day would set off the detonations They had small search lights on hand and would set them up so they could work through the night.
