Poem
I have been instructed to release the following manuscript on the death of my client Mr John Phillips. Who was a former officer in the Royal Air Force. Mr P.J .Carruthers. LLB. Solicitor for estates and wills. London. 16th February 2019. The Manuscript is as follows.- (You are reading this because I have passed on and I am no longer under the constraints of the official secrets act. It covers the time I was seconded to a government department in the period 30th June 1970 to 14th July 1970. A week after my return I wrote about a series of events that I bore witness to. I travelled to London and entrusted the handwritten manuscript with my solicitor with instructions to release it after my death) Date July 21st 1970. J.Phillips. ) My name is John Phillips and at present I am a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force, the year is 1970 and I have five years left to serve before I retire and will be fifty years of age when I do so. I was at the time involved in ensuring that the BAC lightning fighters were kept in peak flying condition and I was in charge of fifty airmen who performed this vital maintenance. I was stationed on the east coast at R.A.F Coltishall in the county of Norfolk in England. I was lucky because I also got to travel all over the world wherever the R.A.F had bases, it was the end of June and on the first of July our squadron were being sent to R.A.F Gutersloh in West Germany for a six month posting and one I was looking forward to. I was in my room when there was a knock at the door, on opening it I was surprised to see two R.A.F policemen (snowdrops') standing there, "Sir" the one said "The C.O. requests your presence right away." I replied that I would be there in a few minutes but the Policeman said. “No sir as in now". Must be urgent I thought and followed them the three hundred yards to the C.O.s office. I arrived and the two policemen waited by the door taking up at ease positions, now I was getting very curious. I knocked the door and Peter Hamble the C.O. Shouted" Come in", I entered and Peter told me to take a seat, also in the office were two men, civilians in dark suits. Peter introduced them as Tim Ramsey and James Pettigrew and added that they were government employees from the national security department. "John " he said, " They would like to ask you a few questions on Russian and Chinese aircraft and their missile systems" They both said hello and then Tim stood up and fired off a barrage of technical questions that I managed to answer with ease, they seemed satisfied because Tim turned to James and said "I think we have found our man". James agreed but asked a few more questions on propulsion in jet fighter aircraft. Peter added “John this is a matter of national security and you are being seconded to their department for the foreseeable future, Tim has told me you will be fully briefed en route to wherever you are going. "I will tell Jennifer that you have had to go abroad at short notice due to some technical emergency in Cyprus and that's a story you must tell everyone on your return should they ask". Jennifer (my wife) had also been looking forward to going to Germany and would be disappointed to say the least, but there would be other opportunities in the future. "Go to your room collect some essentials and come back here as soon as you can but speak to no one, that's an order I'm afraid". My head was spinning, what was going on I thought, the two policemen followed me back to my room and waited outside while I packed a small bag. I saw no one and walked back to the C.O.s Office, I knocked again and entered, the two men stood up and Tim said “If you would like to follow us please". We went outside and a black Ford Granada was parked nearby, a man who introduced himself as Bill opened the door for me, I got in, as did the other two and we were soon on our way, but to where I thought. To be continued.
