A PREACHER’S PRAYER AND GOD’S ANSWER I’ve tried to preach Your message with fervency and zeal, To preach there is a heaven and say that hell is real; I’ve tried to crowd each minute with service all day long, So tell me now, dear Jesus, what am I doing wrong? The congregation’s murmuring, some say I am too loud, Or I’m too narrow-minded, I ought to join the crowd. Some people are not giving, have not tithed for so long, Oh, won’t You tell me, Jesus, what I am doing wrong? I’ve heard their criticism about my family, Or how I will preach nothing but from the KJB, They say I should consider some contemporary songs; Oh can You tell me, Jesus, what I am doing wrong? There hardly is a minute when I can say I’m free, When I’m not counseling someone about their family, Or weeping for their children who’ve run with worldly throngs; Just tell me, won’t You Jesus, what I am doing wrong? I’ve tried to preach salvation so simple and so true, That pure and holy living is what they ought to do, But some say I’m old fashioned, these words do not belong; I wish I knew, dear Jesus, what I am doing wrong. I’ve spent so many hours in study and in prayer, And when I need some helpers they don’t seem to be there; I want to please You, Jesus, stay faithful, true, and strong, But I must not be listening; I’m doing it all wrong. The Savior was so patient as the pastor wept and prayed, And as his voice grew broken, the words seemed to be stayed, His sleep had oft departed in the middle of the night, He spoke with voice so loving, “You’re doing something right. I told you this would happen, I promised you would find The road would not be easy, with thorns and curves would wind. So just keep on, my child, and walk by faith, not sight, You’re on the straight and narrow, you’re doing something right. The problems and the trials are just the enemy; The devil and his angels your work they truly see, So though you’re growing weary, my strength will help you fight, Just keep your faith in Me, child, you’re doing it all right!”
