Poem
Those ol' creaky stairs have seen better days. The varnish withers as the worn wood decays. I look at them at times and want to repaint so that the evident lines seen are far-more faint. Last week I walked up them and felt them sinking, but then later that day I sat on the couch thinking. Maybe those lines mean that they envelope charm. I saw something beautiful, not something of harm. I recall the first Christmas we shared as a family, my daughter ran down them excited in glee. Her feet so tiny, yet loud as she was racing down those ol' stairs I thought needed refacing. How my sweet boy Bo used hurry in the morn. Later in his life he struggled down them forlorn. But they remind me of his youth as strong pup, not when he was old and could no longer climb up. They are noisy at night when others are sleeping, and all the God-awful days of the dog hair sweeping. I miss that dog hair and those tiny feet dashing, the annoying sound of Ella’s sassy feet bashing. Now I see the beauty in those old creaky stairs, but to those indelible memories nothing compares. So, I shall keep them as they are, so ol' and tattered, knowing that the love they endured is all that mattered. *Because of this contest I now love my stairs* September 28, 2018
