Poem
I am a descendant of Greece and the Greeks, We say hello and goodbye by kissing Both cheeks, But I also descend from the British, For my father was very, very English! I am a true mix of English And Greek, And fluent in both languages when I speak. Visitors go to Greece by the score, To see historical sites and what’s more, To experience and enjoy the Greek Way of life, And maybe go to watch a Greek man Marry his bride as she becomes his wife. If someone at the wedding appears To be spitting, Take it in your stride, It is just a noise Made with their voice, Warding off bad spirits that perhaps once With them did abide! Have fun and break a few plates, join in the Greek dancing, The next morning you will feel you Have been to Gym, but The experience will have been enchanting! The tradition and atmosphere is Second to none, And your holiday will be only simply To have fun! Perhaps even the mythical God Zeus, Will arrive at this wedding, To give his blessing! Who knows! If you go to a small café, order a plate of Mezes, don’t look at the time for you are About to see Just how challenging A game of backgammon can be! The players get so intense, they wave Their hands and stand up and cuss, They become so excited, And create an incredible fuss, The people watching are enthralled And delighted! Take a boat trip to the Greek Isles Korfu, Egina, Hydra, Zakinthos and Crete, Are just a few of many you can visit, And perhaps lengthen your stay So that many more may be Added to your time limit. And if you happen to answer a phone in Greece, Just say “Yes? No more is expected of you or less. The English side of me is quite prim and, Proper, But don’t be mistaken I am an avid London Shopper! I love the country side pubs, and the ones in The city, And no one can outwit an Englishman, as Their jokes are inherently dry and witty! Then of course there is Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing street, Where many guards and coppers over centuries, Have worn thin this beat. I enjoyed the horses outside the Prime Minister’s House, Very disciplined, but one had a loud snort I was so near, he dirtied my blouse! Despite warnings around that these Horses may bite, A horse stole my heart, he was an adorable Sight, I stretched out my hand and stroked his nose, And my husband took a photo of me and the Horse, quite up close. We travelled to Stonehenge, and Bath, Went to Stratford upon Avon, saw Anne Hathaways and Shakespeare’s house, Where Shakespeare wrote happily alongside his spouse, Went up to York and into Scotland To visit Edinburgh, the castle is quite A sight to behold And to imagine, that like the Greek ruins, Battles were fought , As people had to uphold The safety of their city and not be captured Or caught! I feel truly honored, privileged and very Very fortunate, That I have dual heritage, but I am told that My English streak is somewhat obstinate!
