Poem

Every June she tours the room with a box
  Finding treasures from old coins to dirty socks

But the largest numbers of objects she sees
  Are colored markers in the desks of Room 23C 

Some years there are hundreds, others just fifty
  In either case her students are not very thrifty

She wonders how rich her charges must be
  To abandon markers which all work wonderfully

So, she gathers them in and heads out the door
  On a mission to surprise kids who are ever-so-poor

She drives across the river to the 'wrong side' of town
  Where a used marker is valued, even if it's brown

She thrusts the box through a window of broken glass
  Inside a short note: Dear Teacher, Something for your class
