Poem
The dainty white curtains were gently lifting and swinging when I reached her house in the country. I could smell marigolds and lilacs when I reached her front walk. The farm was beautiful, and I loved the porch. I often dreamed of living in a pretty house like this. The sun was not down yet, and I could see oodles of goodness and happiness on this farm. It seemed to be bursting with positivity and gratefulness. The curtains blew just enough to allow me to have a peek of her as I got to the porch. She had a ballerina’s body. She looked up and saw me, and smiled. Those lips were to dream for. When she came to the door, I looked at the necklace on her little neck, and my heart stopped. She was more beautiful today than I had remembered. Every time I saw her, I felt this way. She was dressed in a pink sundress with tiny pink and white checks. Her eyes danced a bit when she saw me looking at her best parts. She introduced me to her mother and her little brother, who came over to ask me some little brother questions. He followed us out to the porch. “Could we sit in the swing a bit?” she asked me. She led me to the swing, and frankly, she could have led me to the moon. I would have gone, gladly. I had caught a whiff of her perfume, and I could not keep my eyes off her gorgeous legs. Her little brother followed us out to the porch. He sat opposite us in a lawn chair, and fired off a few more questions. His eyes were like hers, brown with amber centers, intelligent eyes. His hair rose and fell as the breeze gently wafted onto the porch. Their mother came to the screen door and ordered him inside. “He’s okay,” I told her, earning a look of gratitude from both siblings. When her mother heard us laughing, she brought out warm homemade oatmeal and peanut butter cookies. “I hope this is okay, us horning in and all,” she told us. Indeed it was. We sat on that porch and laughed and talked, and enjoyed each other until almost midnight. I had never felt so safe, or so welcomed. The night was magical. We watched the sun disappear in the midst of a pink and orange painted sky. It felt like angels were all about this farm, orchestrating a perfect summer evening. The gentle summer breeze felt like a giant hug. I put my hand on her soft shoulder when it got a bit stronger. “I can get you a sweater,” her mother offered. “I’m good,’ she said. The best evening of my life. Written 8-4-2018 Entered: Summer Breeze Contest Sponsor: John Hamilton
