RHYTHMIC METER: POEM SWEETER Poetry is disciplined in a stream having units like ‘meter’ or ‘foot’ on lines similar to measurements in length, though basically, poem oozes from core of heart and rhythm follows in emotive urge. The pattern must be convinced by a new entrant to the world of poetry. ‘Meter’ is the basic rhythmic structure. Unit of rhythm is defined as ‘foot’. Stressed and unstressed syllables designed in rhythmic pattern producing melodious sound initiate a verse to bloom. On daily conversation a word seemed stressed or unstressed may play opposite role to match with the associated accent, strong or heavy or light or simple corresponding pronunciation in poetry. Poetry is not mere a combination of spoken words with perfect grammar and composition but a rhythmic resonance soothing to ears in musical notes. Rhythmic meters have broad spectrum. Few are illustrated. Accented meter or an Iamb contains two syllables one stressed followed by an unstressed one. Iambic meter: A /sweet / ca / rol / sung / well u / s / u / s / u / s In / church/ rang /eve / ning / bell. Anapestic meter (two unstressed syllables followed by stressed one Cha /ri /ots /slow / dri / ven/ by/ sold / iers /in / fine / dress u / u / s / u / u / s / u / u / s / u / u / s roll/ ing / wheels / move/ at/ ease/ po /pu /lace / to / im / press. Trochaic meter (one stressed syllable followed by unstressed one We / love / each / o / ther / you / are / mine. s / u / s / u / s / u / s / u Through / out / life / you / sweet / heart / will / shine. Dusk on River Iambic Pentameter Little brittle ripples jiggle at ease Slim stream full brim: Dusk-dream, mild breeze. Sunrays loose glaze, dry leaves fly free: Calm tree. Chirping sparrow hopping on green grass in glee. Eve fades, darkens, star blinks, crescent Moon peeps. Couples chat, cheer, embrace, hug, press soft lips. 07/20/18 'Reads Like Music: Haiban Look' Contest by Line Gauthier
